Mission:
AED’s democracy-building and civil society development programs around the world have helped citizens monitor and influence government activities, support market reforms, defend minority and women’s rights, ferret out corruption, and protect the environment. In addition to activities that are specifically designed to build democracy, most of our programs include a component to strengthen civil society through coalition building, grant making, advocacy training, organizational development, or civic education campaigns.

Notes:

AED has extensive experience in grant making to NGOs and other civic organizations around the world. Many of the same principles and processes are used in each program, such as transparent and open competition for grants, participation of local experts in selection, rigorous assessment of financial and management capacity, and results-oriented project monitoring. However, we do not use a cookie-cutter approach to grant management. Our procedures and processes are adapted for and tailored to the cultural and professional environment in each country where we work.
